Why do people like any musical group or act or, for that matter, dislike someone? It's all a matter of taste combined with access (timing and marketing). In ABBA's case there are probably many factors but first among them is certainly skill. The music critic Tom Moon has called ABBA's music "models of impeccable craft". What seemed like safe, simple pop tunes at first glance were actually very carefully crafted by two of the hardest-working composers and producers of their time, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, classically trained and knowledgable music people who had been in the business since they were kids. Their music was unique for its time, a mix of American rock, European folk and classical influences, full of infectious hooks, and subtle and unexpected surprises.

On top of that was the band's talent. All four principal members were skilled, successful musicians in their own right before they teamed up as ABBA. The female vocalists, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, created beautiful harmonies and ABBA's back-up band included some of Europe's best musicians. They also looked and sounded great in person. Their rare concerts were huge draws and their videos were instrumental in introducing ABBA around the world in those days before MTV.

But you also can't dismiss the value of timing. ABBA stopped performing together in 1982 and, unlike other old acts, they have steadfastly refused to regroup for any amount of money. The revival of their music started in the early 90s and has never abated, due in part to the musical play and film featuring their music, Mamma Mia! Their refusal to perform again just seems to fuel a demand for their music that continues to this day.

In the late 1960's John Lennon made a comment that The Beatles were more popular than god, well, people took that the wrong way, because the way some people understood it, really wasnt the way he meant it to be, and other people who dislike The Beatles, have absolutely no taste in music.

They don't at all, plus, if you think that, may I remind you they were a 70's, and 60's band!
