Cancer is a multi-factorial disease i.e. there is not a single cause but a number of contributing factors, some known, some suspected and, in all probability, some unknown. There is a strong hereditary link for cancer and both his parents died of cancer. Also, cancers in other parts of the body can spread to the lungs and George had earlier recovered from throat cancer. But again, it's pure speculation.
