Clive was fired for his unreliability. According to the band, Clive was letting his partying affect his performance on stage (which Steve Harris has always maintained is unforgivable). Clive himself, however, denies this, stating that he was fired after bailing out of the tour to attend his father's funeral. It doesn't seem likely that that would be the only reason for his dismissal, but Bruce Dickinson has since commented that he regrets the way in which the band handled Clive.
Cliff Burton was in a LA playing in his first band Trauma, when J Hetfield and L Ulrich saw the show. After seeing Cliff’s performance, they decided they absolutely had to get him into Metallica. After a couple meetings with Metallica, Cliff said he would join the band if they moved to San Francisco. So James, Lars and Dave Mustaine packed up and headed north from LA.
Burr is still alive, although he is suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. He has been confined to a wheelchair for at least the last 8 years.Update: Sadly, Clive has since passed away.

Bruce Dickinson was with another band called Samson before joining the Iron Maiden in 1981 after the band fired Paul Di'Anno. Other Iron Maiden band members, Thunderstick and Clive Burr were also part of Samson at some point of time.

Iron Maiden has never broken up. They have had some band member changes which include: Clive Burr being replaced before the Piece of Mind album by Nicko McBrain who is the current drummer for Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson replacing Paul Di'Anno before the Number of The Beast album. Blaze Bayley replacing Bruce Dickinson before The X-Factor album. And Bruce returning to replace Blaze Bayley before The Brave New World album. Adrian Smith being replaced by Janick Gers before the No Prayer For The Dying album (although Iron Maiden has had 2 guitar players most of the bands career, in 1999 when Bruce Dickinson returned, so did Adrian Smith to make it 3 guitars in Iron Maiden.) Iron Maiden has had its troubles over the years, but they have stuck together since 1975 and continue since then to be one of the most prominent and influential metal bands of the century.
