He left for personal reasons. Mostly because he was disgusted with how mainstream the band had become. He had told fans and interviewers a while back that he was going to push the rest of the band to make the most darkest, heaviest album ever, but they wanted to keep going mainstream so he bailed. Another reason was that he wasn't happy about how the rest of the band was treating the new bassist after Paul's death. They wont allow him to play on stage with the band, instead they have him in the back where no one can see him. Many reasons led to Joey's decision to leave, but ultimately its because of the musical direction the rest of the band is heading in. Joey wanted to go back to their roots and get heavy again, the rest of the band wanted to try to get on Rick D's top 40 list.

Joey Jordison had a musical history from before his Slipknot days. He received his first drum kit as a gift from his parents at the age of eight, starting his first band while in elementary school. He played drums in many bands until he was asked to join a group called The Pale Ones which eventually led up to Slipknot.
