Bruce Dickinson was the band's long time lead singer. When he left the band in 1993, they hired Blaze Bayley with whom they recorded two albums. Bruce Dickinson replaced Paul Di'Anno in 1981. Since then Bruce seems the best fit for the band's leading vocalist. Since then he left the band. In his absence Blaze got the job for 2 albums from 1993. Iron Maiden reunited with Bruce in 1999.

The original singer for Iron Maiden was Paul Day. Steve Harris fired Paul from the band, later stating his 'lack of charisma onstage' as the main reason. Dennis Wilcock replaced Paul but was later fired after personal problems between himself, Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray.
Wilcock was replaced by Paul Di'Anno, who sang on the first two Iron Maiden albums: 1980's Iron Maiden and 1981's Killers. Di'Anno was dismissed by the band towards the end of 1981, after his 'self-destructive' antics became too much. Di'Anno was replaced in 1982 by Bruce Dickinson who joined the band in a small tour, in preperation for The Number of The Beastwhich was to be released later that year.
