I'd tend to agree the Beatles, because their impact was wider (and slightly earlier) and because they popularised the new production techniques of the later 1960s. The early Stones however had arguably a greater impact on "alternative" rock through their influence on the emerging US garage scene which in turn fed into 1970s punk and some of its offspring, feeding into later stripped-down underground "edgy", "angular" sounds and the rebel attitudes that often accompany them.
The Beatles easily
Agreed. Look at how the Stones copied the Beatles throughtout the 60's. "Yesterday" vs. "As Tears Go By", the use of the sitar on "Norwegian Wood" and "Paint It, Black", Sgt. Peppers vs. Her Majesty's. When I hear Mick Jagger sing "Dandelion," I just shake my head. The Stones ate the Beatles' dust in the 60's. MP
The Beatles released their first single in 1962, their first album in 1963. The Rolling Stones released their first single in 1963 and their first album in 1964, so The Beatles were first.
The Beatles (2.3 Billion)Elvis (600 million)
Elvis was about ten years ahead of the beatles. Interesting side note. In those days getting to appear on the Ed Sullivan show was a guarantee to launch a career. There was a country singer trying to get national attention that appeared on the Sullivan show the same night Elvis Presley did. Of course Elvis so overshadowed the guy that everyone forgot about him. He kept trying and finally landed a gig on the Sullivan show again. But, as luck would have it, that was the night the Beatles first performed in America. So, once again the guy was out performed and forgotten. I used to know his name but can't remember it anymore.
