Gospel Music consists of songs that give a testimony of what the Lord has done in a person's life. It could be about their salvation, or how the Lord's blessed them, or how they have gone through trials and the Lord helped them.
Gospel songs usually are hymn-like, and/or are associated with the southern sounds of music. There are different kinds.
Gospel hymns are set apart from other hymns because of the message they give. Other hymns may simply be praising God, but gospel hymns praise God while telling about what he's done.

An example of a gospel song is Victory in Jesus:
I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

An example of a hymn that is not a gospel song is Fairest Lord Jesus:
Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul's glory, joy and crown.
Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.
Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.
Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forever more be Thine.

Southern gospel has a wide variety of sounds, from soul gospel spirituals, to male quartet style, to bluegrass. (Sometimes little jazz or rock may even be in the mix).
While a lot of southern gospel may have that country twang to it there is still a separate group of singers that classify themselves as country gospel such as Paul Overstreet and Susie Luchsinger (Reba McEntire's sister). And you are more likely to see country gospel artists dress in the cowboy-style unlike most southern gospel singers.
Contrary to popular belief, gospel singing is songs sung by one person or a choir, or a quartet. It should be something that is sung from the heart and strait to the Lord. I understand that people make a living traveling and singing gospel music and that is fine if that is their calling to do so, but don't do it just for the money as so many are. Gospel music should be spiritual and be able to move people in a way that no other music can.
It is true that southern gospel music borrowed from bluegrass and country music (among many other genres, including jazz).

Most rap songs are sung by African-Americans. Country songs are mostly sung by white people. White people are more southern and African-Americans are more ghetto.

Portuguese are European, or "white". They are a Hispanic race, coming from the Iberian Peninsula, but would, today, be considered white. Southern Europeans, mainly Portuguese, Spaniards, and Italians, were not always considered white and were socially/politically excluded as were Africans in the US.
