I finally found the location of the switch on my 1986 Toyota Camry. When looking at the engine compartment from the front, the switch is located on right side of the transmission, down about as low as one can reach, between the transmission and the right radiator fan. If you follow the accelerator cable, down alongside the Transmission Fluid check tube, to where it meets the transmission, you'll be looking squarely at the switch. It has a rocker arm on the front of the switch, with a strong spring attached to provide tension for the gear-shift cable. If you move the gear shift, you'll see this arm change positions. There is also a corrugated tube coming out of the top with two electrical connections in it: a yellow one with three prongs and a white one with eight prongs.
Now that one knows where the switch is, one can follow the directions from a book or the web to remove and replace it.
