July 27, 1970. The crowd began gathering around 11 am, with the first band scheduled around 3 pm. They played their set, and the second band came on & played around 5. There were updates from radio stations about Sly & the Family Stone's arrival. Whether they were true or not, I would have no way of knowing, but I was there. By 6 o'clock, the crowd was calling for Sly & getting impatient. The updates continued--rumors swirled--but still no Sly. The first band came back on to play another set--but they were sort of a country-rock-boogie band, if I recall. I'm trying to remember if it was Cactus, or Flying Burrito Brothers. In any case, for a crowd anxiously awaiting Sly, it was the wrong choice.
