The same actor that stared in Urban Cowboy. I'm a bit rusty on the name but I'm in danger of remembering. Will update with answer when it comes to mind.
If memory serves, that would be Dennis Weaver.
Dennis Weaver did play Chester on Gunsmoke. He also played Marshall Sam McCloud in the eponymous series, McCloud. John Travolta was the Urban Cowboy.
Parley Baer played Chester in the original radio series, starting in 1952. You may remember him as Mayor Roy Stoner on the Andy Griffith Show. Baer ad-libbed Chester's full name as Chester Wesley Proudfoot. Baer was quoted as saying Chester was his most enjoyable role in his long career. Baer passed away in 2002 at the age of 88.
His full name was Chester Goode.
Chester Proudfoot on radio Gunsmoke and Chester Goode on TV Gunsmoke

If I could answer the question, I wouldn't be asking it. I do know that there was a short overlap between Festus entering as a character and Weavers leaving. It must have been a short overlap (I've only seen one or two episodes with both characters included in the cast). I'm not interested in why Dennis Weaver quit the role. He went on to bigger if not better things. I'm curious as to how and when Chester was written out of the series.
