"Now yesterday and today, our theater's been jammed with newspapers and hundreds of photographers from all over the nation and they have agreed with me that the city has never witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool who call themselves the Beatles. Now tonight, you are going to be twice entertained by them: right now and again in the second half of our show. Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles!"
The Beatles first appeared on North American television in the year 1963. The name of the show was the Ed Sullivan show hosted by the man with the same name as the show.
The Beatles were very happy just to be in the US to break into the American music market and appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. While in NYC, they visited Central Park to pose for newspaper photographers. They also went to the famous, Peppermint Lounge. The Beatles were also anxious to visit Miami, Florida since they had never experienced the subtropical climate before. George Harrison was the only one who had already been to the USA a year or so earlier, visiting a sister who lived in Illinois.
Not that much as Beatles; all of them made far more after the band split up and new contracts were made with the individual members. Harrison was quoted shortly after the Beatles broke up that they were "almost broke"; Apple had lost them a lot of money and their manager (Brian Epstein) had made some very unwise decisions. Of the two surviving Beatles, McCartney is worth an estimated £750million, Starr is worth around £200million.

The Beatles were very famous in Liverpool in 1962. They became well known in the rest of the UK following a national TV appearance in January 1963 (the bad weather meant that they had a larger than usual TV audience). They became a phenomenon (for want of a better term) in November of that year following an appearance at the Royal Variety Show. Their US fame started in 1964; probably the single biggest trigger was their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.
