It was LMW 281F, and was built in April 1968- the car was a rare 1500 model (most VW Beetles were either 100 or 1300 cc). The registration number became part of a conspiracy theory that the album cover contained encoded symbolism that Paul McCartney was dead, as theorists claimed that LMW were initials for 'Linda McCartney Weeps' and that the 28 stood for the age that Paul would have been had he lived. In fact, this is nonsense. It was rumoured that the car was owned by John Lennon himself, but this is also untrue- it just belonged to a nearby resident of Abbey Road who'd happened to park it there. It still exists, and is currently on display at the museum of VW Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany, having now been fitted with whitewall tyres.
It says LMW28IF. The 28IF was one of the clues to the rumor of Paul McCartney being dead. People said it meant he would have been 28 years old if he was still alive. He never died though.

Other than the fact that it was recorded at Abbey Road studios (?), it has nothing in common with the Beatles "Abbey Road" album.
