Murray Wilson , father of Beach Boys Brian, Dennis, & Carl Wilson( & Mike Love,s uncle) was The Beach Boys original manager until Brian Wilson fired him during an argument which occurred during a Beach Boys recording session.
The Beach Boys formed in 1961. The original name of the band was The Pendletones, derived from the Pendleton woolen shirts popular at the time. In October 1961, The Pendletones recorded twelve takes of "Surfin'" in the offices of music publishers Hite and Dorinda Morgan at Stereo Masters in Hollywood. A small number of singles were pressed. When the boys eagerly unpacked the first box of singles, on the Candix Records label, they were shocked to see their band name changed to "Beach Boys". From that point on they were known as The Beach Boys.
The short answer is "because Carl Wilson died." Carl, one of the original members of the Beach Boys, was the "glue" that held the band together on the road, and when he died of cancer in 1998, another original Beach Boy, Al Jardine, quit. That left Mike Love and Bruce Johnston in the group. Mike is the only original Beach Boy still in the band.
It was what a one record producer penned them as he sent one of their demos to a record label, the name was never intentional by the actual Beach Boys. They were originally going by "The Pendletons."
