As it happens, Leonardo da Vinci is famous more for the 'anything else' part. He has completed only about 30 paintings in his life: however, he left behind several thousand pages of notes, containing inventions such as parachute, armored car or a tool to help people stay underwater. So he is known not just as a painter and a man who revolutionarized Italian Renaissance painting (with the use of oil paint as opposed to tempera, or with his play with light and shade), but also as a great inventor and a scientist. He is also supposed to have been the first to accurately describe human anatomy, as he was interested in dissecting corpses to find out 'where the soul was' and how bones and muscles and all the stuff worked together.
