Glenn Miller, Joe Loss and His Band, Louis Jordan, Swing, Ballroom, some early jazz, scatt jazz, early country, war time adaptations to already existing songs such as Lili Marline as sung by Anne Shelton and written by Tommy Conor (adapted from a German tune). Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie. Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday.
During the first part of the decade they mostly listened to jazz and big-band Swing Music played by orchestras led by people like Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Charlie Barnet, and many others. There were also a lot of vocal groups such as the Andrews Sisters, the Ink Spots, the Clark Sisters, etc. who performed with the backup instrumentalists.
The musicians' union imposed a ban on instrumental recordings that lasted from 1942 to 1944, but it didn't prevent the vocal groups from making records. People started listening more and more to the singers which took fans away from big bands, although many of them continued performing up till the late 1940s. Teens listened to singers like Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Dick Haymes, Buddy Clark, Jo Stafford, as well as vocal groups like the Pied Pipers and Modernaires who had started with big bands but went out on their own.
In the U.S. during the 1940s, people mostly listened to Big Bands and toward the end of the 1940s, solo artists became more popular. They listened to Be-Bop, rhythm, and blues. Famous people include Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Billy Holiday and others. There was also swing and pop.
In the 1940's the most popular form of music was known as "big band" music. But also jazz and bluegrass, not to mention gospel. Now please define just who this 'they' is...

Yes. Studies show that playing soft, instrumental music in the background while studying will help you to be less distracted -- loud music, or music with singing or heavy rhythms, will distract you even more.

Because teens sing and listen to that music and teens are very impressionable where if there is a song they like about beer they might think it is cool to drink. If they liked a song about giving to the poor than maybe they will
