Without Jimi Hendrix, I would say that there is no such thing as better because it's all a matter of personal taste and each great guitarist has his/her own style just like each painter is different, but there's no one who's the best. After Hendrix, I would have to say he's the best because no one comes close. It's just like for example you have a hundred super strong men and can't decide who is the strongest, and then a 50 feet giant comes your way. There's no question now who is the strongest.
Some bands which spun off The Grateful Dead include Old & In The Way, Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, Diga Rhythm Band, Ratdog, Kingfish, Bobby & The Midnites. Some more input: Each of the boys also had there own. Jerry had a few throughout the years: GratefulDawg, with David Grisman, Mother Macree's Uptown Jug Band and The Jerry Garcia Band, or JGB. Bobby is Ratdog and was Bobby and the Midnights Micky Hart also has Planet Drum Phil Lesh has Phil and Friends Bill Kreutzman and Micky also play together as the Rythm Devils and Bill also has BK3 There were others also.
