In the 1960s and 1970s, Farner played a Messenger guitar, which had an aluminum neck that ran through the body. Because it was a semi-hollow body guitar, he had to stuff rags in it to keep it from feeding back. He then used masking tape to cover the rags in the F holes. This guitar had a built in fuzz tone circuit which is what gave Mark his unique sound during that time.
Starting in the 1970s, Mark would go though a whole list of different Guitars until he found the right one. In chronological order, they include:
Messenger
Gibson SG Les Paul Custom
MicroFrets (2 different models)
Veleno (It was unusual in that it was made entirely out of aluminum)
Gibson L-5S
Fender Stratocaster
Peavey Mystic
Peavey Impact
Fernandes FR-75S
Parker Fly - Custom
Today, Mark travels with two custom made Parker Fly guitars.
