A musician does so with a strap
Well that depends on what you mean really. A Hawaiian guitar can either be a Ukulele, steel guitar, or a lap guitar. The Ukulele is a very small guitar with four strings on it. The steel guitar is more of a traditional guitar, though somewhat smaller and uses a slide to get the smooth sound. The lap guitar is a version of a lap steel guitar used in country music and has several glass slides on the strings, and of course, lays across your lap normally.
Different techniques used to play a guitar-like instrument on the lap include slide guitar, lap steel guitar, and pedal steel guitar. These techniques involve using a metal or glass slide to glide along the strings, creating a unique sound. Players may also use their fingers to pluck the strings while the instrument rests on their lap.
I use a very old out of tune lap harp, but pretty much any thin stringed instrument and loosen the string until it makes that noise, it'll be very untuned so you have to tune it specifically to that one note... not exactly sure what they use though
Lap lap
The lap harp can trace its history to medieval times. Extensive directions are available online on how to replace strings on the lap harp. As well, many sites and shops sell the instrument including Amazon.
