"Rooster" was the nickname the lead singers father had in the Vietnam War. When his father came home he eventually told him his war stories. "walking tall machine gun man" was a reference to his father being a heavy machine gunner. "here they come to snuff the rooster" would mean here they come to kill my father. "Gloria sent me pictures of my boy" Jerry Cantrell was the lead singer of Alice in chains when the song was released. Gloria Jean Cantrell is his mother who would send pictures of Jerry to her husband Jerry Cantrell Sr. in Vietnam

The Rooster is symbolic for America. The Marines carried a flag with an eagle on it. No eagles were in Vietnam but they were very active in rooster farming. Therefore, Vietnam soldiers thought the eagle was a rooster so every time they would attack they would say "It's time to snuff the Rooster" or it's time to kill the Americans. When the song says "Yeah they've come to snuff the Rooster. Oh, here comes the Rooster. you know he ain't gonna die." It refers to the Americans fighting back and surviving.

The title comes from guitarist/songwriter Jerry Cantrell's father. "Rooster" was his nickname in Vietnam, where he fought in the war. The song is about some of his feelings and experiences, told from his perspective.
