it is about a grandfather and his family. from the perspective of a grandchild. and how his life impacted his daughter now that he is dead.

The daughter's father watches, quietly we assume
He's not longer with us but he left this dusty room
In your name and it's an honor, it's a shame but it's your honor
Take it on your shoulder til you can find another

grandfather is watching down on them quietly
he has died but he has left thing be hind for them to deal with
he left his daughter his last name which is an honor, she is upset and shamed by him some way but the last name is still hers and her honor
she must carry that name with her until she is married and takes another

That's enough for now, he should've never left you broken
He should've held you, things your father never could do
That's enough for now, he would've never left you broken
He would've held you, things your father never told you

the daughter is being comforted. it is over now her father is dead
he should have cared more for her, he should of held her but he could not, that was not the type of man he was,
he would not have acted as he did to her though out his life if he had know what it would do to her.

The century before you never could turn 21
Years and years he waited just watching for a son
For someone to go ahead, take the name he said
Years and years he waited and a daughter came instead

when her father was young the life expectancy was far shorter
having a male child was what family's wanted
the father waited and waited for his wife bare a son
so that the boy would take his last name and carry it on to future generations
time passes and the only child they had was a daughter

But that's enough for now, he should've never left you broken
He should've held you, things your father never could do
That's enough for now, he would've never left you broken
He would've held you, things your father never told you

Breathing comes in pairs
Except for twice
One begins and one's goodbye

each time you breath you breath in and out
except for twice
you inhale when you are born which is the beginning
and exhale when you die

Sixty years of sorrow he got 5 or 6 of bliss
Left my mother's mother without so much as a kiss

he was unhappy for 60 years and content with things for only 5 or 6
he died without kissing his wife, the grandmother, goodbye

But that's enough for now, he never wanted to leave you broken
He would've held you, things your father never told you
That's enough for now, I would've never left you broken
I would've held you, things your father never could do
Words your father never told you

he would not have wanted to leave his wife and daughter like this,
never told them, and he wanted them to be ok
the son( the person who is telling the story) would have done things differently if he was his grandfather. things his grandfather did not do (which is typical of older generations of men, they were not to express much emotion or feeling)

Sixty years of sorrow, he got 5 or 6 of bliss
Left my mother's mother without so much as a kiss

Isaac Slade wrote it because his grandfather died. That should give you a start to the meaning.
