I was there. At Laguna Seca in California, it was Saturday night in 1987, it was cold and foggy. At about 1:30 am we heard tuning from the stage, about 600 of us got up and over to the bowl and were treated to about two and a half hours of Touch of Grey repeated over and over, different parts, different band members on stage rotating for their video parts, the giant puppets, etc. I particularly remember them turning the lights on all of us for the crowd shots, I was high as heck on mushrooms and had a super hot chick on my shoulders. God how I miss Grateful Dead camping shows. THANK YOU FURTHUR for Mt. Aire 2010, let's do it again!
Touch of Grey. Prior to it's release the Grateful Dead were playing concert venues at College Campus Theatres so small that graduations couldn't be held at the venue. Contrary to Grateful Dead Merchandising, In the 1960's they were a bad band opening for Janis Joplin. Technically, the Grateful Dead are a TWO hit wonder band. A "hit" is considered any song that reaches the top 40 in Billboard, and Truckin' hit #37 in 1970.
The Dead never had a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, although their 1987 hit "Touch of Grey" landed in the top 10. The song did reach No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, which measures the most-played songs on mainstream rock radio stations.
