It was originally written for, and sung by Gloria Jones in 1964. A great Motown classic. It can be found on YouTube.
The meaning: It's a song about a person that is in a relationship with someone they can't have/or had but it's no longer working/or will not work. They feel love for that person but the love is tainted (the other person doesn't love that person enough or not the same amount of love returned.) Therefore, the person wants to get away from the other person. They feel they " got to runaway, get away from the pain you're driving to the heart of me." Another lyric " The love we share seems to go nowhere." They love each other, but they can't be together for some reason. It's going nowhere. They want to be together, but nobody is making a move. Something or someone is in the way, perhaps.
It's a great love song, actually. Two people who can't be together , and it's hurting the other person more. The love is tainted , so that person wants to move on , get away so that they won't feel the hurt of not having him/her. They can't take it anymore.
