Electronic music refers to music that emphasizes the use of electronic Musical Instruments or electronic music technology as a central aspect of the sound of the music.
Electronica includes a wide range of contemporary electronic music designed for a wide range of uses, including foreground listening, some forms of dancing, and background music for other activities; but unlike electronic dance music, it is not specifically made for dancing.
So, you know how pop has subgenres, like dance pop, bubblegum pop, piano pop, etc? Electronica is just a subgenre of electronic music.

'Electronica' can also refer to one kind of electronic music, which could be described as downtempo, leftfield, or intelligent electronic music.
Techno is usually 120-140bpm dance music with a mechanical rhythm.

∙ 13y agoThe difference I have found historically is electro was created years before techno. Electro is one if not the 'first' danceable form of electronic music. Techno is said to have originated from Detroit's music pioneer Juan Atkins. He used the term to describe his style of music. He found the term from the book The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler.
Musically, before it became distorted by digital software, electro was is distinctly recognized by its use of the Roland Tr-808. Musically, before it became distorted by digital software, techno was recognized by the Roland TB-303. At least that is my take.
