I don't recall right off what the recommended range of compression is for a 15hp Briggs, but 120lbs is certainly sufficient to start and run th engine. If its a 4 stroke it will be around 10.0:1 10-28-08 Right-o, 120 is great. Briggs no longer releases comp ranges, but states a minimum of 60 to run. Depending on model, that's probably a 7:1 or 7.5:1 engine. Briggs are designed w/low comp ratios for durability, resistance to detonation, and low fuel-grade requirements.

briggs doesn't offer compression ratings for their engines. I will usually pull it 3 to 5 times and look for 90 to 120. anything less is a problem and if it doesn't hold compression there is a problem
Briggs and Stratton does not release specific compression values. Anything above 120 psi should be just fine, around 90-100 and you're most likely due for a rebuild. A better test is a leakdown test, with can help in determining where compression is being lost.
The compression can be different from one engine to the next depending on mileage and maintenance. What is important is that all cylinders are within 10/15 lbs of each other.

I have a 2005 and compression should be close to 120 psi. Normally a good engine will have compression between 115 and 130 psi but a leak down test should be performed also to know the full condition of a cylinder.

The easiest answer is when it fails a compression test. Buy a compression tester (farily cheap), and test each cylinder. If one single cylinder is below 120 psi, or if one cylinder reads 15% less pressure than the cylinder with the highest pressure, your engine should be torn down and checked. The problem might only be in the heads, but it's still time for some serious work.

If it's in good shape, Then all cylinders should read about 150 LBS. Less is okay as long as all of them have no more then 10 LBS. difference between them. If the compression is less then 120 LBS. then the engine has valve or pistion ring problems.
B&S does not specify compression readings. Look for 120, give or take 20. More important than actual compression is the difference between the 2 cylinders.
