the Well-Tempered Clavier
Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier" was sent into space aboard the Voyager spacecraft in 1977 as part of the Golden Record. This collection of preludes and fugues showcases the complexity and beauty of Western classical music. It was included to represent Earth's cultural heritage to any extraterrestrial beings that might encounter the spacecraft.
Johann Sebastian Bach was a prolific German composer. He wrote concertos, operas and oratorios for orchestra and chorus. He composed more than 300 cantatas for choir and orchestra. The Well Tempered Clavier is a profound compilation of 48 preludes and fugues for keyboard (two sets of 24 each in 24 different keys).
Chopin composed 26 finished Preludes for solo piano and one was left unfinished. Chopin wrote 24 Preludes for solo piano, Op.28. One in each key corresponding to the circle of 5th's; no doubt, an homage to Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier", a collection of two books containing preludes and fugues in all modulations. Chopin also composed a 25th prelude, Opus45 in C# Minor and a 26th prelude WoO in A-flat Major. The latter being elementary in composition. Recently, a fragment was found of a Chopin prelude in the unusual key of E-flat Minor.
In "The Well-Tempered Clavier," J.S. Bach composed a total of 48 preludes and fugues, covering all major and minor keys. Specifically, he wrote 24 pieces in major keys and 24 in minor keys, corresponding to each of the 12 major and 12 minor keys. This structure illustrates Bach's exploration of harmonic possibilities and serves as a comprehensive keyboard exercise for musicians.
Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musical genius. Some of Bach's well known pieces are "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" "Toccatta and and Fugue in D Minor" as well as his variations of Preludes, Fugues, and Fantasia series.
He wrote his two-part inventions and three-part inventions for educational purposes, but also mentioned the purpose of study in his forty-eight preludes and fugues.
Elizabeth Sollenberger has written: 'A graded analysis of the organ preludes and fugues of John Sebastian Bach for teachers and students providing a compendium of increasingly difficult performance problems'
To me a good source of analysis (in terms of both style, voicing, and countrapuntal ingenuity) is his 48 preludes and fugues. See the link below.
Two sets of Prelude and Fugue called the 48 Preludes and Fugues, written in chromatic scale order from C major to B minor.
