Back in 1987 Modern Drummer had a contest, drummers had to submit a taped solo performace and the top three Won Neils Candy Red Tama, and the Slingerland Kits from the 70's.The Candy Red Kit has been completely restored to perfection, which it deserved.I don't know what happened to the Slingerland kits and the First Tama rosewood kit.As far as the Ludwig kit and previous DW kits,I would guess he still Owns them.
As a young man Neil was inspired by the Jazz drummers Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. In later years Keith Moon of The Who and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin were also his inspiration.
The biggest packaged drum sets would have eight or nine drums, depending on how many floor toms you get. Seriously huge rigs like Neil Peart or Nicko McBrain have are custom ordered, and when you custom-order a drum set it can be as big as you like.
The most basic drum kit is a 4-piece: snare drum, bass drum, mounted/rack tom, and a floor tom. Also, 14" hi-hats, a 16" crash cymbal, and a 20" ride are pretty standard. The sizes aren't that important, but these sizes are the most common. It's possible to get by without a floor tom or a ride cymbal if absolutely necessary, but the set up listed is pretty bare boned as it is.
Michael Portnoy's "Mirage Monster" is a 20-piece kit. A few guys had really large kits--Neil Peart, Joey Jordison and John Dolmayan come to mind--but Portnoy's is the king. At least one of Portnoy's kits was designed so that two players could play it at the same time--this for drum duets during Dream Theater shows. Now, if you'd included players who weren't in any one band, Terry Bozzio's got probably the biggest kit going--the "SS Bozzio." -If I'm not mistaken, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers has a Guinness Book of World Records entry for playing the largest drum kit consisting of 308 pieces. Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa et al) presently tours with this kit. Not sure how big, but daunting to say the least. 21 foot pedals help run this monster
According to most of the drum magazines out there, he is, in fact, the best drummer ever. He is currently performing with the Canadian rock band Rush.

A tuba. There's really no such thing as a "standard" drum set. Charlie Watts and Neil Peart are both drummers, but Charlie uses a four-piece drum set and Neil uses forty or fifty pieces.

Most of his fellow musicians acknowledge that Neil Peart is one of the best rock drummers alive. He is immersed in the art of drumming, and takes it very seriously; whether providing the percussion for a Rush song or performing a drum solo, he is someone other drummers try to emulate. Neil has studied with some legendary drummers, and has also expanded his own repertoire by mastering jazz drumming, in addition to his skill at being a rock drummer. Neil has also won numerous awards, especially from music magazines like "Modern Drummer" and "Drum!"
