He suffered from health problems for a number of years and found managing it difficult while on tour (the band have an extensive tour schedule). He had planned to retire on his sixtieth birthday and left the band on 31st December 2004.
The only band member to have died, also in 2004, was original bassist Clint Warwck (born Albert Eccles).
Ray Thomas retired from the band on his 60th birthday (29th December 2002) as planned in order to spend time with his family and then new grandson. A modest and private man, he has kept out of the publc eye but has made a couple of appearances since retirement.
