Chester Goode

What happened in the final episode of Gunsmoke?

Matt Dillon (actor James Arness) was the Marshall of Dodge City, Kansas. This was a wild old west town with lots of crime. Matt was strong, honest, a great shot, and totally devoted to duty. Kitty Russell (actress Amanda Blake), known as Miss Kitty, owner of the Long Branch Saloon, was a good friend, and a possible romantic interest, though their relationship was never well defined. Matt's devotion to duty prevented them from ever getting married. Doc Adams (actor Milburn Stone) was a good friend, older than Matt, who gave sage wisdom as well as medical treatment. In early episodes, the deputy was Chester Goode (actor Dennis Weaver), who walked with a limp and spoke with a light southern drawl. In later episodes, the deputy was Festus Haggen (actor Ken Curtis), almost never clean shaven, who spoke with a strong country accent. He was often paired with Doc Adams in good natured, cantankerous mutual insulting matches. Other regular characters included Newly O'Brien, another deputy in later years, Sam the bartender, who worked for Miss Kitty, and Louie, the habitual drunkard. For a few years actor Burt Reynolds played blacksmith, and occasional deputy, Quint Asper.
