According the biography, Tragic Country Queen by Jimmy McDonaugh on pages 357-358: On May 16, 1999, Bruce Levy issued a sixteen page report based on the autopsy. Probable cause of death: heart failure with cardiac arrhythmia due to chronic pulmonary emboli with pulmonary hypertension. Contributing cause: "intestinal dysmotility on pain management." Manner of death: "could not be determined." Lab tests indicated the presence of two drugs in Wynette's system, Versed and Phenergan. Unfortunately there was no way to tell if Dilaudid has been in her body because it was "one of the substances that dissipates during embalming process." Versed is a very dangerous drug and should only be administered in a hospital setting. George Richey denied being told that Versed was a dangerous drug.
