I think it was a washtub bass. She very well may have played a washtub bass in an episode; however, I watched an episode last night in which she played the harpsichord with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. She made her first "stage performance debut" with Flatt and Scruggs on the show sporting a new hairdo and a mermaid-esque full-length gown. She tossed the harpsichord and launched into a Broadway-style rendition of some song that I had never heard and absolutely blew the audience as well as Flatt & Scruggs away. Classic Granny!!

It is either the keyboard or the harpsichord. I think. The clavichord was a forerunner of the piano and might also be called a cousin.
The piano first known as the pianoforte evolved from the harpsichord around 1700 to 1720, by Italian inventor Bartolomeo Cristofor. Harpsichord manufacturers had been determined to produce an instrument with a better dynamic response than the harpsichord. Bartolomeo Cristofali, the keeper of instruments in the court of Prince Ferdinand de Medici of Florence, was the first to solve the problem..
