My opinion on this would be:

  • Folksongs contain important information, messages, stories and history from the past.

  • Important lessons are learned from them and are transferred from one generation to the next. The elder generation passes these onto the younger generation. This thus bridges the gaps between the generations.

  • It is fun and universal to sing. When many people in the community sing folksongs in unison, it creates a positive and happy atmosphere.

  • Takes you back to one’s own traditional or cultural roots. Not forgetting where you come from. This is to ensure that the history and foundation of these songs will be remembered and shared by each generation.

  • Reminds us of who we are, where we came from and also warns us of possible outcomes or consequences if we do not watch our actions and intentions.
