The sport received its first big boost in 1934 when it was part of the World's Fair in Chicago. By 1948 synchronized swimming was a exhibition sport at the Olympics, but it was forced to serve an extended apprenticeship. After five appearances as a non-medal sport, synchronized swimming made its full Olympic debut at Los Angeles in 1984.

What does Synchronized swimming do?
Synchronized swimming is when 2 or more people doing the exact same moves in the water at the exact same time and there is also synchronized diving, which is when 2 people do the same style of dive in synch (at the same time). Swimmers are literally dancing in the water and for that reason the sport used to be called water ballet. Some moves resemble gymnastics - somersaults, flips, pikes, tucks, and walkovers. They also spin upside down a lot and sometimes link their legs together. The only limit to what they can do in the water is they can't touch the pool walls or floor at any time. Routines are choreographed based on the music, just like in figure skating. The Olympic swimmers are amazing because they make it look so easy!
