Scott Joplin is a famous African-American piano player/performer. He wrote The Entertainer, a tune that has been played in a number of old west movies on player pianos. He also wrote a number of Ragtime classics, though that musical era never really kicked off. Part of that seemingly stemmed from racism.

Sadly, he died from untreated tertiary syphilis.
