He first performed solo at age five in 1963 in a school talent show after his brothers refused to let him join the group. Afterwards, they let him, and he performed with them for years.

His first solo single was released in 1971 entitled "Got To Be There." He was 13.

The first solo album he released on which he had creative control, Off The Wall was released in August of 1979, within a month before he turned 21.

The landmark Thriller album was released in December of 1982 when Michael was 24. He may have considered himself no longer a part of the Jacksons, but they reunited with Jermaine (the brother who quit in the mid-seventies) for a TV special, and went on their last tour together in 1984. The following year, he quit for good.
