Demi Lovato was only 11 years old when she started cutting. She hid her problems by covering up her cuts with makeup.

The public got their first glimpse of Demi's problems in 2008, when a picture of Demi on the red carpet showed her scars. At the time Demi's reps denied the issue and blamed the marks on jelly bracelets. Demi says "that picture, when it came out, terrified me. The entire saw my innermost darkest secret that my parents didn't even know."

After the incident, Demi did not stop cutting but instead became more discreet. "That was a wake-up call, but then I just started doing it in places where no one would see it," she explains. Demi told her family and friends that she was fine, but continued cutting in secret.

In November 2010, when Demi was 18 years old, she finally entered treatment for the problems which had plagued her for years. She admits that she has cut a few times since treatment, but she is doing much better now. Shortly after leaving treatment, she tattooed the words "Stay Strong" over the scars on her wrists as a reminder to herself.
