he was given a right handed guitar, but turned it upside down and restrung it. then he spent hours and hours learning and perfecting

He learnt by himself.... and copying others when he started.

Cobain liked to claim he taught himself. But in reality he took his first few lessons from his Uncle Chuck.
You have to use a distortion box.
Not sure what guitar, but Butch Vig mic'd the guitar cab with 4 mics: a Shure SM57, a Sennheiser 421, an AKG C414, and a Neumann U87. Kurt would pick which sound he liked the best.
I know one time he took a Boss DS-1 and combined it with his own amps drive. Kurt didn't use a lot of effects, but those he did use were very important to his overall tone. Most important to Cobain's sound were his distortion and phaser pedals. The Small Clone Full-Chorus by Electro Harmonix and the SansAmp Tri-A.C. are our two favorites for their unique tone. The Rat2 Distortion is used by lots guitarists for extra OD boost.
I'm pretty sure he used the dcon rat distortion pedal on in utero. i might be wrong about that.

Well, it depends how little you can use it, but the easiest thing to do might be to learn how to make the chord shapes with your right hand and strum with your left, like Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain.
