As a young man he had aspirations to be a bass singer and even joined a boys quartet and did tenor parts. He had also received some basic training on drums and cornet while at reform school, but later he switched from playing cornet to Trumpet. He is not the first, but is credited as the first to sing Scat. He has a unique deep gravely voice and certainly could have been a great bass singer.
