No, he was not. His infamous quote about not letting a black man shine his shoes was made because he thought it was disrespectful to have them do that. Not because he was racist. He moved in the Blues circles and had many black friends.

No, it doesn't seem so. He grew up in the south and learned his music from the jute bars of the southern blacks. He combined their blues, jazz sounds with a rock type beat and created a new form of music.
