It's widely accepted as fact that he was gay. However, while he once referred to himself as "gay" in an interview, he also claimed to be bisexual on a separate occasion, and at one time had a woman partner whose name I don't immediately recall though he eventually left her to be with a man, who I believe he remained with until his death in 1994 (the lady and he remained firm friends through the remainder of his life, despite the breakup)
