Not really. A really good instrument will project well, but it isn't effective for large venues. Even a fairly small place of 200 people would struggle to hear it without any amplification.
Not really, it is a stringed instrument that is pretty mellow. Larger versions, such as the concert (named for use in concerts!) and tenor, tend to have a bit more volume. Many have electronic pick-ups, so can be amplified as a guitar is.

I don't think the lute would be classified as loud. It is a stringed instrument and if it was put in a category. I would put it in the soft category.

It depends to a great extent is how it is played. The larger sized can be very loud and if amplified you can get to the extremes. Or you can pluck it softly and get very soft sounds.
