Yes, Metallica is still together. They are currently working on the proper follow up to their 2008 album Death Magnetic. Their most recent release was in 2012 with the critically panned and hated album Lulu, which was a collaborative effort with Lou Reed.

NO, they had a few internal problems back in 2001. Jason Newstead their bassist left the band, James Hetfield when into rehab and was apart from the band for a year, they took like a vacation but didnt break up.

No they have never split up. It may have seemed this way in the past when they became inactive for quite some time after Jason left, but the band was just trying to reconnect with themselves and work out what it was that they wanted as a band. This was between the 'Reload' and 'St. Anger' albums.
