Led Zeppelin was formed as the New Yardbirds by Jimmy Page to complete the Yardbirds tour contract when they broke up mid-tour. See AllMusic for details
After that came the name change. Can't blame them. Led Zeppelin is a much cooler name than a new version of a broken up band.
