A detective is a detective. It doesn't matter if you're in Homicide, Highway, or ESU. Bottom Line: Pay rates are based on rank, and time in service. There is no special rate of pay based on what division you are in. There are however, stipends, which are like a special allowance of a few extra hundred dollars a month. Stipends are paid to individual officers if they are in really specialized and dangerous jobs such as Bomb Squad, Aviation, etc. And even then, they usually have to pass some type of qualification course in order to receive it. And once they leave those units, they lose those stipends.
There are other kinds of stipends paid to any officer for any special qualifications or advanced education that is considered a skill, and that makes that officer an asset to the department, regardless of what division he/she is in. These would include bilingual, college degrees, instructor certified, etc. You won't lose those stipends as long as you maintain proficiency in whatever skill or skills you demonstrated in order to receive the stipend.
I'm assuming you like the show Law & Order: SVU. Great! But if that is what's motivating you to become a police officer, be warned. That show is a VERY unrealistic representation of real life as a cop. (My mother met a real detective, and they do wear their own suits. Yes they do, she's met them personally.)
Anyway, if you do decide to take the plunge, be prepared to spend a MINIMUM of five years in patrol before even being considered for detective. You're more likely to put in 7 to 10 years patrolling, and when you finally do make detective, you'll probably still be in uniform. There are many, many good officers who never make detective.
Most departments use a civil service exam to promote the best qualified candidates to detective. The NYPD however, promotes based on "merit." Which pretty much means if you're so-and-so's nephew, you've demonstrated enough "merit" as to be promoted to detective.
I sure hope the allure of Mariska Hargitay and that other guy, running around the city in expensive suits is not your only research.
Refer to the link below to find out how much a detective in the NYPD makes. Even with the recent "pay raise", NYPD pay still sucks......bad.

Nothing, he quit.
There's just one episode called 'Screwed' for SVU, originally aired on May 22, 2007. The episode was about Detective Tutuola's nephew Darius Parker, played by rap artist, Ludacris. Many fans would have liked to see a 'part 2' because they felt that too many of the SVU folks' issues had been dragged out but not resolved satisfactorily.
