I Will Always Love You was a #1 hit twice for Dolly Parton long before Whitney's version. More importantly, Dolly wrote the song so she has received royalties from every copy ever sold. Royalties for songwriters are much higher than for the performer so in essence she made millions off the song---far more than Whitney did.
