Please let me know if you get an answer. I have a vintage Alvarez acoustic guitar that I acquired in the late 70s. The model is 5056 and the serial is 43331. It has the mother of pearl tree of life inset in the entire length of the neck. The back of it is beautiful redwood. It was made in Japan. I would love to know the value. About 15 years ago, I took it to a music store to get an appraisal for my homeowners insurance and they set the value at $650; however, the internet searches I have done in the past few days set the value of 70's Alvarez significantly lower. I was originally told that the mother of pearl tree of life was a limited edition that set the value higher.

I think the confusion here is that there are at least TWO different Tree of Life models, one made by ALVAREZ which is the 5056, an all laminate model, top spruce, back and sides are flame grain Rosewood, Ivoroid bound Rosewood fingerboard, chrome enclosed tuners, Mahogany neck. These will vary slightly depending on what year it was made. Earlier models may have the adjustable bridge, first released in 1976-77. These range in value depending on condition, between $175 and $250. These were made in several Japanese factories in the 1970's and early 1980's.
NOW, this is the model that you may have it mixed up with.. which is the Alvarez YAIRI model, DY95N which was a limited edition model, which sold for approximately $2000 in the early 1970's! It is an all SOLID model, and very scarce, one sold on EBay recently for almost $5000! Made by KAZUO YAIRI for Alvarez, unlike the regular Alvarez brand this are a higher quality guitar and only made at the Yairi factory in GIFU, Japan.
