I marched in President Richard M. Nixon's second inaugural parade on January 20, 1973 with the Thomas A. Edison High School marching band from Alexandria, Virginia. I remember there being 1977 members of this event entry which included all of the area high school bands, drum majors, majorettes and flag twirlers. This number reflected the year Mr. Nixon would have been ended his term. We practiced on a runway at Andrews Air force Base and were purported by the president to be his favorite event due to the massive number of participants who marched in precise harmony and as one in a cohesive unit. I DO recall hearing the president saying this on national television news, but am searching the internet for written verification of his statement. It was truly one of the highlights of my life...

Many celebrations include marching bands or drum corps. Different holidays where parades occur are good times to see a marching band perform in a parade setting. Along with parades marching bands also perform field shows that most often take place during the halftime of a football game. Of course, a football game only has at maximum two bands that each perform once. Many bands also take part in competitions as well as band festivals. Both of these types of shows focus completely on marching bands and their performances. Numerous marching bands belong to different competitive organizations whether they are a high school band, college band, or some variation of a drum corps. Since these organizations have member schools that vary in size, they have different levels of judging depending upon the size of the school/marching unit. Each of these organizations hosts so many shows a year where these groups perform usually culminating in a championship for the year. Band festivals differ from competitions for the fact that they are not judged and simply a way for bands to perform their shows.
Most marching bands are found at high schools or colleges.
They don't the student chooses to be in a marching band wich they could choose in high school! Trust me i know cause I do it :)
Marching bands DO play at home football games, and parades.

The Macy's Thanksgiving day parade is a cavalcade of floats, marching bands, and performance artists.
You can download parade applications from the official Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade website. However, only directors of marching bands or performance groups are allowed to apply.

Military marching bands, concert bands, high school marching bands, and college marching bands use saxophones for their music. It is a flexible-use instrument.

High school bands are typically chosen for the inauguration parade through an application and selection process. The Presidential Inaugural Committee reviews applications and selects bands based on factors such as musical ability, geographic diversity, and representation of different types of schools. Bands may also be recommended by governors or members of Congress.
