Sounds (all of them) are produced by vibration. The faster the vibration, the higher the pitch. Whether the vibration is produced on a string or with air, it's the speed of the vibration, and the length that vibration has to travel that determines the pitch.

Same way regular guitar does, Either through amplification if its electric or through acoustics if its, erm, acoustic.

The thing that makes the sound on all string instruments including the bass is the string obviously. The problem is that the string alone is too quiet and needs to be made louder. This can be done

Electric: The electric bass has something that's called a pickup on its belly which will pick up the vibration of the strings right above it, transfer an electric signal through a cord from the bass to the amplifier (Amp). The Amp is a speaker that you plug in. It will pick up the signal and recreates the sound, only louder. It can also alter the sound, depending on how you play with the dials.

Acoustic: The acoustic bass is built in the same manner as the acoustic guitar. The body of the acoustic bass is large and hollow, and there is no pick-up. The sound from the strings echoes through the hollow body and comes out much louder then it would normally.

So there you go

The air-holes. The f-shaped holes in the body of the instrument amplify the sound made by the bow being drawn across the strings. Without the holes, the instrument would still play, but the sound would be almost inaudible.

The strings of a double bass may be plucked with the fingers (called pizzicato), but are more usually played with a bow (called arco).
