Remove all of the screws holding the rear plastic valance panel in place. There are three on each side, two long ones underneath the liftgate window and two short ones right below the long ones. There are also two hidden in the carpeting down low on the panel (you may have to feel for them), but don't try to take the panel off without locating these two screws. Once the panel is off, carefully remove the sound proofing material located underneath. This step is not mandatory, but it does allow you to see everything. Next locate the latch at the bottom of the door. There is a locking rod attached to the latch on the left side. You can get to it with your fingers and undo the clip. Then just slide it out of place and remove the rod from the latch mechanism. There are then three 40 star bit bolts holding the mechanism in place. Remove all three and pull the latch out. There are two wires going to the latch. These control the signal from the liftgate ajar switch. Remove the plug to the switch. There is one 15 star bit screw holding the switch in place. Remove it and twist the switch to remove. Replace the switch and re-install in reverse order.
Climb into the rear storage area from the back seat and using a screw driver remove the door skin from the hatch. This will give you access to the linkages and latch mechanisms from the inside. You can then put your hand down to the latch inside the door and by pulling on the metal bar linking the latch to the handle you can open the door.
It should, the body on the Jeep ZJ 93 - 98 are the same.

The only way i found to disarm the alarm was to use the back hatch lock. lock it and unlock it a few times with the key. if this doesnt work try the door locks
the Laredo is a Cherokee. it's just a different trim package. there's also the briarwood, sport, wagon, etc. it's all the same. yes, the radiators are the same. so is EVERYTHING ELSE in or on the vehicle. so, you could buy the electric seats from a Laredo and put them in a sport. or you could by the rear hatch with the wiper and put it on a briarwood. as long as you have the wiring and switches you can change the trim on any Cherokee. as far as the drivetrains they are exactly the same... As long as you are not trying to put a Grand Cherokee radiator in a regular Cherokee.
Yes, the only significant changes is that the 1990 didnt have airbags and the 1995 did. There will also be slight wiring differeneces but nothing that will stop you from taking parts from one and putting it on the other. Pretty much all jeep parts are interchangeable. I've seen a 88 with a 96 motor. and my 91 xj limited has seats from a later model grand cherokee.

The rear hatch is unlocked with the same switches as the other doors. It is then only opened with the outside handle.
go to a freaking mechanic.
doc brown said it was under the flux capasitor
Open the rear hatch. you will see 2 screws on the side of the taillight. Remove them and pull the taillight out.

most likely it is the high mount rear brake light. Open hatch and you will see where to remove the screw to access the bulb.
Yes. You can swap body parts from any Cherokee (XJ) from 1997 to 2001. Some body parts from earlier years are also compatible.
Our mechanic had to climb through the inside of the car, into the trunk area and open it by removing the hatch cover. That's the only way he could replace the latch.
I just want to replace the hatch cover, will the bag deploy when I pry it off?
Put your key into the driverside door and slowly turn it to unlock. I found this is sometimes in the passenger door, and sometimes in the hatch.
