There is a small generator that charges up a battery. Mine shines fairly brightly with a good charge. you have to rewind it everynow and then but winding is free and very easy. hey when you think about it you burn calories not money.

The winder winds a clock like spring, the springs drives a small generator. The DC generator powers the radio.

A wind-up radio has a hand-operated electrical generator which stores electrical charge in either a capacitor or a battery; the radio will then operate until the charge is depleted.
