Trevor McNevan - who is the only original remaining member of the band - has explained to interviewers that he wanted to name his band that described his relationship with God. As a teenager, he struggled with a lot of issues and ordeals, and he wanted to describe what God felt like to him. He decided to use the idea of a crutch to describe what God was to him at that age - helping him out with his ailments and such. In addition, the "thousand foot" part of the name is just speaking to how big God really is.
